Artificial grass has improved dramatically over the past decade and now features in thousands of Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire gardens. It is not the right choice for every situation, but for the right garden it solves real problems. Here is an honest assessment of the pros and cons.
The Advantages
Artificial grass eliminates mowing, feeding, scarifying and watering — the bulk of routine lawn maintenance. It stays green year-round, copes with heavy use from children and pets, and performs well in shaded areas where real grass struggles.
- Zero mowing — saves hours of maintenance annually
- Stays green through drought and heavy use
- Excellent for shaded areas where real grass fails
- Ideal for gardens used heavily by children and dogs
- Initial cost offset by zero ongoing maintenance costs
The Disadvantages
Artificial grass gets hot in direct sunlight in summer. It does not absorb carbon or support wildlife the way natural grass does. The initial installation cost is significant, and cheap products look obviously fake. It is also not easily changed if you later want to return to natural grass.
When We Recommend It
We recommend artificial grass where natural grass consistently fails — shaded gardens, heavily used family gardens with children and dogs, and low-use gardens where maintenance is a genuine burden. For ornamental gardens focused on plants and biodiversity, natural turf is nearly always the better choice.
