One of the most impactful but underappreciated details in garden design is edging. The transition between a lawn and a border, or between paving and grass, can look professional and crisp or sloppy and indefinite. Good edging is one of the cheapest ways to elevate the appearance of any garden.
Edging Material Options
The range of edging materials available reflects the variety of garden styles in Hampshire — from traditional to ultra-contemporary.
- Steel edging: sleek, durable, suits contemporary gardens, 20+ year lifespan
- Aluminium edging: lightweight alternative to steel, flexible for curves
- Brick edging: traditional, suits cottage and period gardens
- Granite or limestone kerb: premium, used in formal designs
- Timber edging: affordable, natural, shorter lifespan (5–10 years)
- Cobble edge: decorative, traditional, suits informal gardens
Steel Edging: Our Recommendation
For most contemporary Hampshire garden projects, 3mm COR-TEN or powder-coated steel edging is our preferred choice. It is virtually permanent, creates an impeccably clean line and looks superb against both lawn and planting. The initial cost is higher than plastic or timber but the lifespan makes it exceptional value.
Maintaining Lawn Edges
Even the best edging requires occasional maintenance — re-cutting the grass edge with a half-moon edger or a rotary edger tool twice a season keeps the boundary sharp. Neglected edges grow into borders and paving within a few months.
