Block paving driveways and patios are enormously popular across Hampshire and Dorset, but they are also one of the harder paving types to keep looking their best without a consistent maintenance routine. The main enemies are weeds in the joints, algae staining and sand joint erosion.
Weed Control
Weeds growing in block paving joints are the most common maintenance issue. They can be controlled with a combination of physical removal and weed killer application. To prevent recurrence, kiln-dried jointing sand should be replaced with polymeric jointing sand, which resists weed germination.
- Apply weed killer to joint weeds in spring and summer
- Remove dead weed material with a stiff brush
- Re-sand joints with polymeric sand for long-term prevention
- Seal the surface to make cleaning easier and reduce staining
Cleaning Block Paving
An annual pressure wash removes algae, oil stains and general soiling. Use a low-pressure setting and a rotary surface cleaner attachment — high-pressure jets can dislodge joint sand and damage block faces. Apply a dedicated block paving cleaner for oil stains before pressure washing.
Re-sanding and Re-sealing
Block paving joints need re-sanding every three to five years as sand is displaced by rainfall and foot traffic. After re-sanding, a quality block paving sealer helps lock sand in place, deepens the colour and significantly reduces future staining.
