Waterlogged gardens are one of the most common problems we encounter across Hampshire and Dorset — particularly in the clay-heavy Test Valley and the lower-lying areas around Southampton and Ringwood. The right solution depends on the cause, the scale of the problem and the outfall options available.
Diagnosing the Problem
Before committing to a solution, identify the cause. Waterlogging can result from impermeable clay, a compacted sub-surface pan, inadequate falls on paved areas, blocked drains or a high water table.
- Dig a test hole 60cm deep — does water collect within 24 hours?
- Is the problem seasonal or year-round?
- Check the fall of any adjacent paved areas
- Look for signs of blocked existing drains
French Drains
A French drain — a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe — is the most practical and cost-effective solution for most Hampshire garden drainage problems. It intercepts water before it can accumulate and directs it to a soakaway or drainage outlet.
Soakaways and Land Drains
A soakaway provides a destination for French drain water where no existing drain is accessible. For severe or widespread waterlogging, a system of land drains laid in a herringbone pattern offers the most comprehensive solution.
A&T Landscapes installs French drains, soakaways and land drain systems across Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire. Call 07735 916029 for a drainage assessment.
