Drought-Resistant Plants for Dry Summers

June 2025·5 min read

Summers in Hampshire and Dorset have become noticeably drier over the past decade, with several years bringing hosepipe bans by July. Choosing drought-tolerant plants is no longer just about water bills — it is about creating a garden that can look after itself through the hottest months. The good news is that many drought-resistant plants are among the most beautiful and pollinator-friendly available.

Top Drought-Tolerant Perennials

These plants establish in their first season and then largely look after themselves, even through extended dry periods once their root systems are established.

  • Stipa tenuissima — feathery grass, beautiful movement
  • Eryngium — architectural, silver-blue, long-lasting
  • Verbena bonariensis — tall, airy, self-seeds freely
  • Sedum spectabile — late colour, essential for butterflies
  • Phlomis russeliana — evergreen foliage, winter seedheads
  • Agapanthus — spectacular blue flowers in July and August

Drought-Tolerant Shrubs

Shrubs provide structure as well as colour. Lavender, rosemary, cistus and ceanothus are all outstanding performers in dry, sunny conditions across southern England.

Mulching to Retain Moisture

Even drought-tolerant plants benefit from a 7–10cm layer of mulch applied in spring. This reduces water loss from the soil surface dramatically and suppresses weeds that compete for moisture.
