The success of a new lawn depends almost entirely on what happens in the first four to six weeks after laying. Watering correctly, avoiding foot traffic at the right times and making the first cut at exactly the right height are all critical. Get these basics right and your turf will reward you with a strong, lush lawn.
Weeks 1–2: Establishment Phase
Watering is the absolute priority in the first two weeks. New turf must not be allowed to dry out. Water thoroughly at least once a day — twice in hot weather — keeping the soil beneath moist throughout. Stay off the lawn completely.
- Water daily, or twice daily in hot or windy weather
- Check underneath a corner of turf — soil should be moist 5cm down
- Do not walk on the turf under any circumstances
- If edges start to shrink, water more frequently
- Keep pets and children off the lawn
Weeks 3–4: First Cut
Once the turf has knitted into the soil (test by gently tugging — it should resist), you can make the first cut. Set the mower to its highest setting — never remove more than a third of the grass blade at one cut. Keep watering if the weather is dry.
Weeks 5–6 and Beyond
Gradually lower the mowing height over subsequent cuts. After six weeks, your new lawn can be treated like an established one — though continue to water in dry spells throughout the first summer. Apply a lawn fertiliser at six weeks to support strong root development.
