Turfing in Autumn: Everything You Need to Know

September 2025·5 min read

Many homeowners assume spring or summer is the best time to lay turf, but autumn is actually the ideal season across Hampshire and the South. Soil temperatures are still warm enough for root growth, rainfall reduces the watering burden dramatically, and turf has the whole winter to knit in before it faces the stresses of summer.

Why Autumn Turfing Works So Well

The combination of warm soil, lower evaporation rates and reliable autumn rainfall in Hampshire and Dorset creates near-perfect conditions for turf establishment. You will spend far less time watering than with spring or summer laying.

  • Soil is still warm from summer — roots grow actively
  • Lower air temperatures mean less moisture evaporation
  • Autumn rainfall in Hampshire reduces irrigation needs
  • Less weed-seed germination than spring or summer
  • Turf firms up over winter and is ready for spring use

Ground Preparation

Thorough ground preparation is as important in autumn as any other time. Remove all existing vegetation and weeds, cultivate to at least 15cm depth, level carefully and firm by treading. Apply a pre-turfing fertiliser and rake level before laying.

Autumn Aftercare

Water after laying and continue if there are prolonged dry spells — autumn is not always reliably wet. Make the first cut when growth reaches 5–6cm, setting the mower high. Avoid walking on frozen turf in winter.
