Autumn is when experienced gardeners do their most important work. The mild soil, reliable rainfall and reduced pest pressure make it the ideal time for planting, lawn renovation and ground preparation — tasks that will pay dividends all through the following year.
Lawn Tasks
September and October are the best months for lawn renovation across Hampshire. Scarify to remove thatch, hollow-tine aerate compacted areas, overseed bare patches and apply an autumn lawn feed — low nitrogen, high potassium.
- Scarify in September before overseeding
- Hollow-tine aerate compacted areas
- Overseed bare or thin areas with a quality seed mix
- Apply autumn lawn fertiliser
- Top dress to improve levels and surface drainage
Planting and Borders
Plant spring bulbs from September — daffodils and alliums now, tulips from late October to November. Divide perennial clumps that have outgrown their space. Plant new trees, shrubs and hedging as the soil remains warm from summer.
Structures and Hard Landscaping
Check fencing for storm damage before winter. Re-seal natural stone paving if needed. Clear leaves from patio drainage channels and path surfaces to prevent slipping. Store or cover garden furniture before the first hard frosts.
