Your Spring Garden Clear-Out Checklist

March 2023·4 min read

The spring clear-out is one of the most satisfying garden tasks of the year — transforming a tired, winter-worn garden into a clean canvas ready for the growing season. This checklist covers everything worth doing in February and March across Hampshire and Dorset gardens.

Priority Tasks

Some tasks should take precedence over others in the spring clear-out — either because they need to happen before other work, or because they have the biggest impact on the season ahead.

  • Cut back all herbaceous perennials left for winter interest
  • Clear dead growth from ornamental grasses before new shoots emerge
  • Remove leaves from lawns, borders and paving
  • Prune roses before new growth exceeds 10cm
  • Cut back buddleja, lavatera and other late-summer shrubs hard
  • Apply a thick mulch of compost to all borders

Structural Check

Inspect all fencing, pergolas, trellises and garden structures for winter damage. Check paving for frost heave or cracked slabs. Clean patio and path surfaces with a pressure washer before the season begins.

Lawn Assessment

Assess the lawn condition before the season starts. Is it worth scarifying and overseeding, or does it need more significant renovation? March is the ideal month to carry out any lawn work before the season gets underway.
