How to Plan a Planting Scheme from Scratch

July 2022·6 min read

Planning a planting scheme feels daunting to many gardeners, but it becomes straightforward once you have a method. The secret is to work systematically — starting with the big structural decisions and working down to the smaller detail planting. Here is the approach we use when designing planting schemes for Hampshire clients.

Step 1: Assess Conditions

Before choosing a single plant, understand the conditions in the border. Aspect (sun or shade), soil type and moisture levels all determine what will thrive. Choosing plants that suit the conditions is 80% of planting success.

  • Aspect: full sun, partial shade, full shade?
  • Soil: clay, chalk, sandy, loam?
  • Moisture: dry (chalk or sandy soil), moist (clay), average?
  • Microclimate: sheltered, exposed, frost pocket?

Step 2: Layer the Border

Plan in layers — tall structural plants at the back, medium-height flowering plants in the middle, low edging plants at the front. Include a mix of early, mid and late-season flowering plants to spread interest across the year.

Step 3: Plant in Groups

Plant in odd-number groups — threes, fives and sevens — for a natural, generous look. Repeating the same plant in several positions along a border creates rhythm and cohesion. Leave adequate spacing between plants — they will fill the gaps within a season.
