September Gardening in Hampshire and Dorset

September 2025·5 min read

September sits at a pivot point in the garden year — the warmth of summer still lingers but the pace is beginning to slow. It is a month of endings and beginnings: dahlias and late perennials still flowering while bulbs go in for spring and lawn renovation gets underway. Used well, September sets the entire following year up for success.

Lawn Renovation in September

September is the single best month for lawn renovation across Hampshire and Dorset. Soil temperatures are still warm, rainfall increases and grass seed germinates rapidly.

  • Scarify to remove accumulated thatch
  • Aerate compacted areas with a hollow-tine fork
  • Overseed bare patches with appropriate seed mix
  • Apply autumn lawn feed — low nitrogen, high potassium
  • Top dress with sandy loam if surface is uneven

Planting in September

September is the beginning of the prime planting season for trees, shrubs, perennials and hedging. Begin planting spring bulbs — daffodils, crocus and alliums can go in now; save tulips until November.

Harvest and Clearance

Harvest remaining vegetables and fruit and compost spent plants. Clear summer bedding as it finishes and replace with winter pansies and cyclamen for continued colour through to spring.
