Tree Stump Removal: Options and Costs

November 2025·5 min read

Tree stumps are left behind after tree removal and can cause a number of problems — they are trip hazards, they can harbour honey fungus which spreads to other garden plants, and they simply take up space that could be planted or paved. Understanding the removal options helps you make the right choice for your situation.

Stump Grinding

Stump grinding is the most common and practical method for removing tree stumps in domestic gardens. A stump grinder uses a rotating cutting disc to chip the stump down to 200–300mm below ground level, leaving wood chip that can be used as mulch.

  • Fast — most stumps take 30–90 minutes to grind
  • No chemical use — safe for surrounding plants
  • Access required for the machine — check gate width
  • Typical cost: £100–£300 per stump in Hampshire
  • Roots remain but decay naturally over time
  • Suitable for turfing or paving over within a few weeks

Chemical Stump Treatment

Chemical stump killers containing potassium nitrate or glyphosate can be drilled into fresh stumps to accelerate decay. This is a slower process — taking 12 months or more — and not suitable if you want to plant or build on the stump site quickly.

Full Stump and Root Extraction

For large stumps where roots must be fully removed — for example before building foundations or a new patio — a tracked excavator is used to dig out the stump and root system completely. This is the most expensive option but gives a fully clear result.
