The winter months from November to February can feel like a pause in the garden, but they are actually a valuable opportunity. Hard landscaping projects are often easier to schedule in winter, structural work is less disruptive to plants, and planning your planting scheme now means you can hit the ground running in March.
Winter Maintenance Tasks
Even in winter there are important tasks to stay on top of to avoid problems building up through the cold months.
- Check and repair fencing and structures before storms
- Keep paths and steps clear of algae with a pressure wash or treatment
- Protect vulnerable plants with fleece or horticultural glass
- Check tree stakes and ties — adjust if rubbing or too tight
- Clear gutters and check drainage channels are free-flowing
- Continue to mow on a high setting in mild spells above 7°C
Winter Planting
Bare-root trees, shrubs and hedging plants can be planted from November to March at significantly lower cost than pot-grown equivalents. Hardy winter bedding — pansies, cyclamen, heuchera — provides colour through the darkest months.
