Garden Redesign in Southampton: A Case Study

March 2025·5 min read

This project in a residential area of Southampton involved a complete redesign of a typical 1970s rear garden — rectangular, mostly lawn, with a crumbling concrete patio and mixed, overgrown planting around the boundaries. The brief was for a contemporary family garden with clear zones for entertaining, play and planting.

The Design Brief

The clients wanted a large, level patio for outdoor dining, a robust lawn for children to play on, low-maintenance planting and improved boundary screening from neighbouring properties. Budget was £18,000.

  • Large porcelain paving area with built-in seating wall
  • New turf lawn with crisp straight edges
  • Contemporary close-board fencing on all boundaries
  • Low-maintenance planting scheme in two border areas
  • Concealed lighting in paving and planting
  • Raised sleeper beds for herbs near the kitchen door

The Build

The project took 12 working days. We started with the groundworks and fencing, then laid the paving and built the seating wall before finishing with turfing and planting. Working in this sequence meant the lawn was protected from heavy foot traffic during the harder work.

The Result

The finished garden bore no resemblance to the tired plot we started with. The clients were delighted — particularly with the quality of the porcelain paving and the clean lines of the lawn edges. The family used the garden throughout the following summer.
