Project Spotlight: Patio and Retaining Wall in Fareham

December 2022·4 min read

This Fareham project is a good example of how a sloping garden can be made dramatically more usable and attractive through thoughtful terracing. What was a steeply sloping, difficult-to-use plot became two distinct usable levels connected by a stepped path.

The Solution

We created two terraced levels using a 900mm railway sleeper retaining wall across the width of the garden. The upper level became a 30m² porcelain patio directly adjacent to the house. The lower level, held back by the sleeper wall, became a new turfed lawn.

  • Railway sleeper retaining wall — three courses, 900mm high
  • Drainage backfill behind the wall
  • 30m² light grey porcelain patio on upper level
  • New cultivated turf on lower level — 50m²
  • Stepped access between levels using sleeper risers

The Build

The project took five working days. The most complex element was the retaining wall construction, which required careful levelling and drainage detailing. Once the wall was in, the patio and turfing followed quickly.

The Result

The owners described the transformation as life-changing — from a garden they rarely used to one they wanted to spend time in every day. The two distinct levels created a genuine outdoor living area and a children's play space separated by the sleeper wall.
